Those of you who have a research interest in mental health may like to check out a new journal which has just hit the eshelf...

Mental Health Liaison is the official journal of the Mental Health Consultation Liaison Nurses Association of NSW and ACT. Here is a brief description of the journal sourced from the publisher's website:

"The Mental Health Liaison eJournal aims to provide a forum to publish original research and scholarly papers about the complex speciality of mental health consultation liaison nursing. Papers such as original research, literature reviews, case studies, opinion pieces and practice papers are invited. Being an eJournal authors can expect to have their work widely circulated and be made available to professionals internationally."

While Mental Health Liaison is not peer reviewed, it makes a valuable contribution to this field of study.

ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Source

The library now has a subscription to Proquest Nursing and Allied Health Source.

This collection includes a full range of nursing and allied health ejournals and ebooks, Joanna Briggs evidence-based summaries and systematic reviews, multicultural reports from CultureVision, and a range of Medcom Training videos.

These videos can be a useful tool for students and lecturers as they cover basic and advanced skill procedures.

New Embase Enhancement

Do you regularly use Embase?

Embase is a large Biomedical database similar to Medline but with more of a European focus. As of December 2010, Embase have improved functionality by including three new filters; drugs, disease, and study type.

Embase have provided a short video which provides an overview of how to utilise these filters in your search.

Change to CINAHL Interface

From Monday 10 January the CINAHL interface will look slightly different.

For those who may not be familiar with it, CINAHL is a key database in the field of nursing and can be accessed here.

Currently there are three search boxes on the Advanced Search screen. However, from next week there will only be one search box:

The ‘Suggest Subject Terms’ box will still be ticked by default. To combine searches, click on the ‘Search History’ link as before.

OvidSP Interface Change

If you've searched MEDLINE, or any other OvidSP database lately, you may have noticed that the interface looks slightly different. Don't worry -- everything still works much the same!

The new enhancements include:

• Improved Output options

'Print, Email and Export' (e.g. to Endnote) options now appear at the top of your results display. You can also create a folder of your results by using the 'Add to My Projects' option.

• Results Tools

Quicker and easier sorting and filtering of search results by date, subject, author, journal etc. See the box to the left of your results display.

• My Workspace

Create work projects and organise all of your research materials—individual articles, search strategies, images, and more—into a dedicated area. You can use your Personal Account to access these tools.

• Ovid Toolbar

This downloadable tool lets you quickly and easily save critical research material to My Workspace while you’re working outside OvidSP.

Please note that the new version will retain all of your current saved settings and customisations!

New Endnote Style for Nursing!

We have created a new output style for Endnote that adheres to the Sydney Nursing School referencing guidelines. This is an updated version of the old style and includes new reference types such as web pages, conference proceedings, government Acts and reports.

The new style is called "Sydney Nursing School" and is available for download from the Endnote guide.

Merely save the file into the styles folder on your computer at C:\\Program Files\EndnoteX3\Styles. The new referencing style will then appear in your list of available output styles.

Anatomy.tv is an electronic resource you can access from both on and off campus.

It contains complete anatomical 3D models from skin to bone for various body parts and includes biomechanical animations, dynamic MRI, and movie clips to supplement the 3D model. There are also online quizzes for many of the modules.

Endnote and database classes

As the new semester begins, the library is helping everybody get back into the swing of research by running a number of Endnote and Database classes.

Endnote:
Endnote is a bibiliographic management tool that allows researchers to download citations (and in most cases the full text as well) into a library that they can then use to create and manage the bibliographies in their written documents. This simple program can save you hours and hours of work!

Cinahl:
Cinahl is the largest database covering Nursing and Allied Health information. Like Medline, it has a powerful indexing system that can save valuable research time and improve the results found. Our classes focus on how to get the most out of the database and what to do with your results once you have them.

Saving and rerunning searches and emails alerts

Did you know that once you have done a search in a database and found the articles you want, you can save your search and rerun the exact search again a few months later. You can also have the database send you an email whenever anything new which matches your topic is added?

You can do this by performing your search then clicking saved search/alerts. You will be asked to login or register with the database. You will then be able to access your saved searches and rerun them by logging in at any time.

Email alerts - you can choose to set up an email alert. You can do so when you first save a search or you can go to the search history page and modify the search settings at any time.

If you would like to know more about saving, rerunning searches and email alerts in a specific database you use, please do not hesitate to contact the Nursing Library.

Anatomy and image resources from the Library

Anatomy.tv

Anatomy.tv is an online resource designed for students and teachers of anatomy. It has complete anatomical 3D models from skin to bone for various body parts and also includes biomechanical animations, dynamic MRI, quizzes and multiple choice questions, clinical information and movie clips.

For educators, it allows you to save or export images and movie clips and will support linking to allow embedding in a Learning Management System.

SpringerImages

SpringerImages is a collection of scientific images that spans the social sciences and humanities, scientific, technical and medical fields. It includes high-quality clinical images, graphs, photographs, histograms, figures, and tables.

It has over 533,000 images relating to Medicine and public health.
You can jump from the image to the source article if the Library has access to the journal and you can also create personalized image "sets," that can be easily exported for use in presentations or lectures.

Informit to cease Meditext database

The Australian database Meditext is no longer available as of January 2010. The database owners RMIT will be focussing on a new collection called Informit Health Collection.

The Australasian Medical Index (AMI) will replace Meditext as an archive database only. All copyright cleared full text articles contained in Meditext, as at 31 December 2009, and for which RMIT Publishing has secured the rights, will be transferred to Informit Health Collection.

Health Collection is a full-text allied health database. Its content includes research articles, reports and case studies of practical support to anyone studying or working in therapeutic, diagnostic and preventative health roles.

You may have notice that some electronic journals no longer appear in the catalogue. This reflects the current state of copyright negotiation with Informit Health Collection. We hope to see most of these restored in the near future.

Publishing for impact: What are the best indicators?

Where should you submit your research to gain the most exposure? Which academic journals carry the most prestige or tend to have their articles cited the most?

Traditionally Impact Factor has been a good indicator of the prestige of a journal, indicating how many times articles are cited within a particular period of time, however; it doesn’t account for consistency of quality and can be skewed by a small number of heavily cited articles.

Recently, Journal Citation Reports supplied by Thomson Scientific have added new indicators to their reports which can shed some new light on the characteristics of various journals. Below is a brief explanation of each indicator available.

To access Journal Citation Reports (JCR) for individual, subject subsets or groups of journals log in to JCR through the Library

Impact Factor: This is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the past two years that have been cited in the JCR year. It is calculated by dividing the number of citation by the total number of articles published in the previous two years. An impact factor of 1.0 indicates that each article on average has been cited once in the previous two years.

Immediacy Index: This is the average number of times an article is cited in the year it was published. It is calculated by dividing the number of citations to articles published in a given year by the number of articles published in that year. This has a tendency to remove the advantage of bigger journals over smaller ones but may advantage frequently published journals.

Cited Half-Life: This is the median age of articles that were cited in the JCR year. For example, a half-life of 7.0 indicates that 50% of articles cited in this JCR year were published in the last 7 years.

Eigenfactor Score: This measures the number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year. Unlike the Impact Factor indicator, it discounts self citations, counts across sciences and social sciences and includes a weighted measurement based on the time researchers spend reading each article. This is possibly a more holistic indicator of impact.

Article Influence score: This measures the relative importance of the journal on a per-article basis. It is calculated by dividing the Eigenfactor score by the fraction of articles published by the journal. The median score for this is 1.0, a higher number indicating that each article in the journal has above-average influence.

There has never been a better time to upgrade Endnote!

If you are yet to upgrade to Endnote X3, you may want to think about doing so before starting research in the New Year.

An issue with earlier versions of Endnote (X2 and earlier) has emerged whereby the year is lost when importing citations for publications printed in 2010. You can manually add the year to the reference or keep your eyes peeled for a patch that will be released in the first quarter of 2010. To be notified of this update you can register on the Endnote website.

This 'delayed millenium bug' is not an issue in Endnote X3 which can be downloaded form the University IT website.

Housekeeping before the holidays

The staff at the Nursing Library would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and hopes everyone has a relxing break before we start back in the new year.

A few housekeeping reminders if you are planning to be away for an extended period;

Renew any books that may be due while you are away. You can do this easily online through your MyLibrary account.

Watch out for recalls!

Other library users may request books over the christmas and new year period. They will not be due back til the library reopens on the 4th of January however; if you are going to be away you may find yourself in a situation where you cannot return them and at $2 per item per day - it can really add up!

To avoid this, return all non-essential library books or arrange for them to be available for someone else to return on your behalf if recalled. Check your MyLibrary or email account once per week for recall notices.

End of semester changes to opening hours

With the end of semster the Nursing library will be moving to reduced opening hours.

From the 23rd of November, 2009 to the 22nd of February, 2010 we will be open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm. We will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

The library will be shut during the University Christmas closure, starting on the 19th of December and reopening on the 4th of January.

PubMed changes it's interface

Do you use PubMed reqularly? You may have noticed that they have decided to revamp their interface.

Some changes are small, whilst others are more significant - but don't worry, the library is ready to help you navigate through the streamlined interface.

Just contact Isabelle, Erica or Matthew and we can demonstrate how to get the most out of PubMed searches, including the use of MeSH terms to harness the National Library of Medicine's powerful subject thesaurus, set up auto alerts and creat customised filters to automatically categorise your results.

Trial of ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Source

The Nursing Library is running a trial of ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Source.

This is a large resource covering Nursing and related Allied health journals as well as an extensive list of Nursing Evidence Based Practice reviews and guidelines from the Joanna Briggs Institute.

In addition, the package provides access to over 200 training videos covering nursing procedures and general patient interaction, as well as cultural awareness sheets detailing the health practices of various religions and cultures.

You can access the trial from the database trials page . It will run until December 2nd, 2009.
